School might be starting up again, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! Countless kid-friendly events are only a quick walk or ride from our apartments at 1751 Market Street. If you’re looking for weekend fun for your child but don’t know where to start, check out the community events below!
Family Fun Day at the Asian Art Museum
200 Larkin Street
Want to plan an afternoon excursion without taking a trip across town? Try Family Fun Day at the Asian Art Museum! The Art Museum is only a brief fifteen-minute walk from the apartments at 1751 Market Street, making it an ideal destination for art-loving families. Each Family Fun Day blends creative art projects, engaging activities, and immersive storytelling to encourage an appreciation for Asian culture and art in its young attendees. During the fall season, the Museum’s bi-monthly Family Fun Days will center on the intersection of art and fashion, and look specifically at how art shaped Korean fashion trends. Best of all, kids who attend will be able to create their own wearable art via projects like fabric button-making and ink stamping! All Fun Day projects are planned and directed by high school interns at ArtSpeak.
The Asian Art Museum is a fantastic community organization; parents living on Market Street should take note! Family Fun Day is free with museum admission — but kids aged 12 and younger always get in for free. If you want to invite friends from other neighborhoods along, street parking near the museum is cost-free on Sundays.
Upcoming dates: August 18th, September 1st, and September 15th
Sunday Streets is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that works to bring safe, community-centered fun to the city’s streets — and this fall, it’s hosting a block party in our neighborhood! The nonprofit organizes semi-regular community events; during the spring, summer, and fall seasons, it blocks off a few streets to vehicle traffic to host a five-hour, neighborhood-wide extravaganza. The traffic redirection allows local pedestrians, roller skaters, bicyclists, and entertainers to take over the block. Specific programming varies from month to month, but Sunday Streets typically arranges for entertainment offerings such as dance performances, hula hooping, yoga classes, dodgeball games, and other community games — all at no cost! Residents of 1751 Market Street should plan on seeing a block party in the Tenderloin on September 8th from 11 am to 4 pm.
Other dates for 2019 include block parties in the Western Addition on September 22nd and in Excelsior on October 20th.

The Exploratorium prides itself on being a no-shush zone for kids of all ages. This science-packed museum offers interactive exhibits, touchable displays, and endless opportunities for exploration and learning. Young children can build mountains out of magnetic sand and jump around inside a kid-friendly tornado. Don’t worry, there are activities available to older children, too; those aged seven and up can journey through the Tactile Dome’s pitch-black maze. This month, the museum will be hosting special evening hours in the Dome; while the museum itself closes at five, enrolled guests can visit the tactile maze after-hours and, to quote the Exploratorium’s event listing, “walk, crawl, climb, and slide your way through a wonderland of textures using only your sense of touch as a guide.”
It’s not an event to miss! Adults can visit the Exploratorium for $29.95, youth for $24.95, and children 4-12 for 19.95. Kids under three get in free!
